The Mythbusters tested this one twice once in the Season 6 pilot episode Exploding Water Heater and again in Myth Evolution each time the Mythbusters tested tanks by modifying them and they got the same resaults each time where the tank exploded and landed at the end of the Alameda Runway. After testing each tank the Mythbusters built a shack acording to the California Building Code and placed Buster or one of the other crash dummies inside and blew it up. Although the experiment failed in the pilot episode Adam managed to get evidence from the internet of incidents of it happening and each time the resaults were the same with pictures of the destroyed buildings and the water heater found a mile away.
